Clemens SaurThe stages we follow to turn a measurement idea into a custom sensing system, from feasibility rig to product, with examples from our funded research projects.
Clemens SaurSpiking networks and event-driven chips promise anomaly detection on microwatts. What neuromorphic computing is, what vibration research shows and how it compares with a tuned microcontroller.
Clemens SaurDIGIBATT360 links production, field and supply chain data around the EU battery passport through a federated data space. The consortium, the data flows and our part in it.
Clemens SaurThe VCD4.3 grades wheel flats and bearing faults on a freight wagon with no battery and no radio. The design decisions behind it, from the classifier to the capacitor bank, and what is still open.
Clemens SaurThe battery passport is only the first. Under ESPR, every product group with ecodesign rules gets a digital product passport. What it requires, which products come first and how to prepare.
Clemens Saure-LAS+ had a project period of May 2023 to April 2026, according to the Fraunhofer IDMT project page. What the project on multimodal inline inspection of laser welds set out to do, and what we take forward.
Clemens SaurConnected sensors, edge hubs and their firmware are products with digital elements under the Cyber Resilience Act. What applies, when, and why reporting duties have applied since 11 September 2026.
Clemens SaurWhat a Qualcomm QCS6490-class processor brings to a multi-sensor edge hub: CPU, GPU, ISP and NPU, read from the datasheet and translated into sensing workloads.
Clemens SaurA sensor that writes its result into a passive RFID tag can be read without spending its own energy on a radio. How dual-interface tags work, UHF versus NFC, and what to watch in a design.
Clemens SaurThe design reasoning behind our hub-and-node architecture: why each sensing function gets its own node, what the hub does, and which trade-offs we accept in return.
Clemens SaurAn end-of-line test proves a battery module works today. Inline inspection shows whether each joint was made right. Where each one belongs, and how to split the work.
Clemens SaurA channel-by-channel checklist for specifying vibration, acoustic, vision, thermal and depth sensors on a multimodal test rig, including the time and data questions people forget.
Clemens SaurThe Machinery Regulation replaces the Machinery Directive from 20 January 2027, with new rules for machine-learning safety functions, software logs and protection against corruption.
Clemens SaurWhy leaks and friction are loud above 20 kHz, how to run an ultrasonic leak survey, what ISO 29821 covers, and when a fixed sensor beats a handheld detector.
Clemens SaurThe battery passport does not require weld quality data. Why that is, which passport fields welding still affects, and three sensible places to keep per-weld records.
Clemens SaurWayside load detectors, microphones, cameras and on-board axle box sensors all find wheel flats. They differ in coverage, timing and how well they grade severity. A comparison for rail engineers.
Clemens SaurVendor-neutral criteria for choosing an edge AI development kit for industrial sensing, from sensor interfaces and recording to software support and security, then our own kits.
Clemens SaurHow to get trustworthy thermal images of motors and switch cabinets: emissivity, reflections, load, pixel size, the relevant standards and a field checklist.
Clemens SaurWhy spot welds on battery tabs fail cold or spit metal, why a resistance test often cannot tell the difference, and which electrical, mechanical and vibro-acoustic signals help.
Clemens SaurFive structural reasons a single sensor misses machine faults or raises false alarms, an illustrative pump example and a checklist for deciding when to add a second modality.
Clemens SaurAccelerometers measure what a structure does; microphones hear what a process emits. A practical comparison and a checklist for choosing between them.
Clemens SaurLack of fusion, piercing, porosity, brittle intermetallics: the defects that matter in battery cell laser welding, and what photodiodes, cameras, OCT and acoustics can see.
Clemens SaurA practical engineering guide to vibration energy harvesting for condition monitoring sensors: what the physics allows, how to condition the power and how to design an energy budget that closes.
Clemens SaurA modality-by-modality look at cameras, thermal cores, time-of-flight, microphones and accelerometers: what each one sees, what it misses and what fools it.
Clemens SaurNotes on our EEAI 2025 talk in Naples: why condition monitoring on moving, unpowered assets works better when the sensor carries its own verdict.
Clemens SaurFrom 18 February 2027, EV, LMT and industrial batteries over 2 kWh need a digital passport. What Annex XIII asks you to record, who sees it, and how to get ready.
